Professor Steven Brown

Consultant General Surgeon

MBChB, BMedSci, FRCS, MD

Specialises in

I am a Consultant General Surgeon at the Northern General Hospital, with a busy private practice at Spire Claremont Hospital.

I have been a consultant specialising in colon, rectal and anal problems as a consultant since 2002 and as a Professor of Surgery at the University of Sheffield since 2016. I have trained mainly locally in Sheffield, graduating in 1990.

I was trained in colonoscopy initially by a Japanese specialist and subsequently in Singapore. I have carried out over 5,000 procedures and am involved in the National Bowel Cancer screening programme. As a consequence of training most procedures can be carried out without the need for sedation. I use novel techniques including Over The Scope Clip (OTSC) for fistula surgery.

I work closely with gastroenterologists to provide seamless joint care. I am Chair of the national surgical lead group for inflammatory bowel surgery and lead ileo-anal pouch surgeon in Sheffield. I am regional representative for CCUK and advocate of keyhole surgery for IBD.

I am a founding member of The Pelvic Floor Society as well as regional lead for pelvic floor problems with referrals from around the UK. I've introduced novel techniques in this area into Sheffield including neuromodulation, injectable sphincter augmentation and FENIX device. I offer local anaesthetic hernia repair.

I am the current President of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.

I have published extensively and lectured nationally and internationally on experience with novel innovations for haemorrhoids including HALO (THD), PPH ligature, RAFAELO and Ultroid. I have written national guidelines for management of fistulas in Crohn’s. I led on the recently published National guidelines for inflammatory bowel disease.
